CMMN Training - Chapter 1: Case Plan, Human Task
Related subfolder of the training project: "C01"
Chapter Overview
In this training chapter you get familiar with the case plan and the most frequent CMMN model element, the human task.
Element Description:
-
A CMMN model always consists of one case plan element
-
The case plan represents the execution context for its associated tasks, like a human task
-
In contrary to BPMN pool a case plan cannot be structured into lanes which specify the potential owner for the case plan execution
-
Therefore, the candiate user or candidate group of a human task has to be configured explicitely
Remark Case Plan Element:
The first image displays a case plan element according to the CMMN Standard. The second image displays the xAPPnow representation of a case plan element, which is based on a BPMN pool element. We are using a BPMN pool element to later provide the possibility for lanes and the specification of potential owner, which makes a case plan more readable related to responsibilities of human tasks.

Sample CMMN Case Plan
Tutorial Model: Automation/Case Plan/Training/CMMN/Chapter/C01/CasePlan_HumanTask
Case Plan Explication:
-
The case plan "CasePlan_HumanTask" consists of a human task "Enter Data 1 [TeamA]" and a human task "Enter Data 2 [TeamB]"
-
Both tasks will be activated directly when the instance of case plan definition "Case Plan - Human Task" is created
-
After both tasks are completed the case plan is completed automatically, too

Remark: The candiate group of the human task is added in brackets to the label to directly recognise the responsible.
Exercise
In this exercise you will get familiar with the basic CMMN elements by implementing the case plan as described above. The case plan will then be published online, where the human tasks of the case plan can be executed directly in the xAPPnow User Portal.
Exercise 1: Create the Case plan Model
Remark: Add your user name as a prefix to the model name to easily filter your personal case plan in the runtime environment (User Portal, Camunda).
-
Step 1: Open context menu of folder "Automation/Case Plan/Training/CMMN/Exercise/C01" to select function "Create Model"
-
Step 2: Enter model name "Username_CasePlan_HumanTask" in dialog "Create Case Plan Model"
-
Step 3: Click button "Search" to open dialog "Select Template"
-
Step 4: Select template "TMPL_CasePlan" with double click or click button "Select"
-
Step 5: Click button "OK" to create the case plan model
Exercise 2: Complete the Case Plan Model
Complete the case plan model like the model above.
-
Step 1: Drag&Drop 2 human task from the palette with label "Enter Data 1 [TeamA]" and "Enter Data 2 [TeamB]"
Exercise 2: Link User Task Model to Human Task
Link a user task model to both human tasks
-
Step 1: Open TAB "General" of human task "Enter Data 1 [Team A]" to link user task model "BasicElements" as submodel
-
Step 2: Select parent model data "caseData1" in dialog "Multi Mapping" to map it with child model data "caseData"
-
Step 3: Open TAB "General" of human task "Enter Data 2 [Team B]" to link user task model "BasicElements" as submodel
-
Step 4: Select parent model data "caseData2" in dialog "Multi Mapping" to map it with child model data "caseData"
Exercise 3: Assign Candidate Group to Human Task
Assign a candidate group to each human task
-
Step 1: Open TAB "Implementation", SubTAB "Responsible" of human task "Enter Data 1 [Team A]"
-
Step 2: Drag&drop "casePlanGroup.teamA" from SubTAB "Business Objects" to map it with "Candidate Groups"
-
Step 3: Open TAB "Implementation", SubTAB "Responsible" of human task "Enter Data 2 [Team B]"
-
Step 4: Drag&drop "casePlanGroup.teamB" from SubTAB "Business Objects" to map it with "Candidate Groups"
Exercise 4: Publish the Case Plan Model
The case plan model has to be published into the Camunda process engine.
-
Step 1: Click button "Publish" to open dialog "Publish Model"
-
Step 2: Enter username and password and click button "OK" to publish the case plan
Exercise 5: Publish the User Task Model
The case plan related user task model BasicElements" of the human tasks has to be published into the xAPPnow User Portal.
-
Step 1: Double click at one of the human tasks to navigate to the related user task model "BasicElements"
-
Step 2: Click button "Publish" to open dialog "Publish Model"
-
Step 3: Click button "OK" to publish the user task model
Exercise 6: Manage and execute a Case Plan in User Portal
The menu function "Case Definition" displays a list of available case plan definition. You can start a new case plan instance and open a case plan to view related case plan instances of a case plan defintion or delete a case plan definition.
The menu function "My Cases" displays a list of active cases. You can open a case plan to view related active and available tasks or terminate a case plan instance.
-
Step 1: Login into User Portal with user "john", who belongs to group "TeamA".
-
Step 2: Open menu function "Case Definition"
-
Step 3: Click button "Start" to start a case plan instance of the selected case plan definition
The menu function "My Cases" displays a list of active cases. You can terminate or open a case plan instance to view the tasks of the case plan.
-
Step 4: Open menu function "My Cases"
-
Step 5: Select case plan instance "CasePlan_HumanTask" and click button "Open" to view active and available tasks of the case plan
-
Step 6: As expected, subdialog "Case Tasks" displays both active human tasks and zero available tasks of the selected case plan instance
-
Step 7: Open menu function "MyTasks" to execute task "Enter Data 1 [Team A]"
-
Step 8: Re-open menu function "My Cases" and re-open case plan instance "CasePlan_HumanTask" to view active and available tasks of the case plan
-
Step 9: Verify subdialog "Case Tasks" only displays human tasks task "Enter Data 2 [Team B]"
-
Step 10: Login into User Portal with user "jane", who belongs to the group "TeamB".
-
Step 11: Execute task "Enter Data 2 [Team B]"
-
Step 12: Open menu function "My Cases" and verify that case plan instance "CasePlan_HumanTask" is no longer available
-
Step 13: Open menu function "Case Definition" and open case plan definition "CasePlan_HumanTask" to verify that currently executed case plan instance is in state "Completed"
Remark: The transition "Completed" automatically triggers when all plan items of the case plan model are completed, terminated, or disabled. With automatic completion enabled (see Chaper 4: Markers), only required plan items have to reach theses states.
