BPMN Training Part 2: Start/End Event, User Task, Sequence Flow
xAPPnow provides an easy usage of a BPMN User Task. Related subfolder of the xAPPnow training project: "C02"
Chapter Overview
In this training chapter you get familiar with the most frequent BPMN process model elements using low code platform xAPPnow.

Further start events and end events are explained in the advanced and expert training.

Sample BPMN Process Model
Tutorial Model: Automation/Business Process/Training/BPMN/Chapter/C02/StartEndEvent_UserTask
Process Explanation:
-
The process is started in the lane of group "TeamA" by a start event.
-
The sequence flow of the start event triggers the user task "Enter Data", which has to be executed by a user of group "TeamA".
-
After the user task "Enter Data" is finished by the user, the user task "Verify Data" is triggered by the sequence flow.
-
The user task "Verify Data" is positioned in the second lane of group "TeamB" and therefore has to be executed by a user of group "TeamB".
-
After the user has finished the user task "Verify Data" the sequence flow triggers the end event, which directly completes the process.
Remark:
-
Always use meaningful labels to easily understand a process model.
-
We recommend to use the format "verb" plus "noun" to specify the label of an activity.
-
The user task has a "User Task" frontend service model assigned as a submodel, which contains a UI Page element with the related user interface.
Please view the video before starting the excercise, because the process is similar to this training chapter.
Exercise
In this exercise you will get familiar with the basic BPMN elements by implementing the process as described above. The process will then be published online, where the user tasks of the process can be executed directly in the xAPPnow User Portal. In this sample a user from group "TeamA" enters a first name and last name and a second user from group "TeamB" verifies this data. This could be implemented by xAPPnow following the exercises described below.
Exercise 1: Create the Business Process Model
Remark: Add your user name as a prefix to the model name to easily filter your personal process in the runtime environment (User Portal, Camunda).
-
Step 1: Right click at model tree folder "Automation/Business Process/Training/BPMN/Exercise/C02" to open context menu "Create Model"
-
Step 2: Enter model name "Username_StartEndEvent_UserTask" and keep option "Model Type: Process" in dialog "Create Business Process Model"
-
Step 3: Click button "Search" to open dialog "Select Template"
-
Step 5: Select template "TMPL_Pool" in dialog "Select Template" with double click or click button "Select"

Exercise 2: Complete the Process Model
Complete the process model like the model above.
-
Step 1: Select second lane and press F2 key to enter label "TeamB"
-
Step 2: Open pool context menu and click at start event element to add it with label "Start" to first lane "TeamA"
-
Step 3: Open context menu of start event and click at user task element to connect it with label "Enter Data"
-
Step 4: Open context menu of user task "Enter Data" and drag&drop a user task element into lane "TeamB" to connect it with label "Verify Data"
-
Step 5: Select both tasks using CTRL + left click and open context menu to configure color light blue
-
Step 6: Open context menu of user task "Verify Data" and click at end event element to connect it with label "End"
Exercise 3: Assign User Task Model
-
Step 1: Assign the user task model "BasicElements" as submodel to both user tasks.
-
Step 2: View the related submodels of the process
-
Navigate to the user task model of the user task with a double click
-
In user task model navigate to the UI page model with a double click at UI page element
-
Click tool bar button "Back to Parent Model" twice to return to process model
Exercise 4: Publish the Process Model
The process model has to be published into Camunda process engine. The process will be started online directly.
-
Step 1: Click button "Publish" to open the dialog "Publish Model"
-
Step 2: Enter username and password
-
Step 3: Publish the process with options "Start Process"Remark: Typically, a user publishes into his own tenant specific environment. You need specific access rigths to publish a model into environments of other tenants.
Exercise 5: Publish the User Task Model
The user task submodel of the process related user tasks has to be published separately into the xAPPnow User Portal and is directly online.
-
Step 1: Double click at one of the user tasks to navigate to the related submodel (both user tasks are using the same user task model)
-
Step 2: Click button "Publish" to open dialog "Publish Model"
-
Step 3: Enter username and password
-
Step 4: Publish the user task model

Exercise 6: Excute the Process online in User Portal
-
Step 1: Open User Portal
-
Step 2: Login into User Portal with user "john", who belongs to group "TeamA".
-
Step 3: Start task "Enter Data"
-
Step 4: Execute task "Enter Data" and enter process data for "First Name" and "Last Name" in the dialog and click button "OK".
-
Step 5: The task list does no longer contain this task.
-
Step 6: The next task of the process has to be executed by a user of "TeamB".

-
Step 7: Login into User Portal with user "jane", who belongs to group "TeamB"
-
Step 8: Execute task "Verify Data" to verify the process data entered by a user of "TeamA"
-
Step 9: Click button "OK", which ends the process
Exercise 6: Repeat the Process Execution
You can repeat the execution by starting the process again.
-
Step 1: Login into User Portal with user "john"
-
Step 2: Open menu "Processes" to start your process "Username_StartEndEvent_UserTask"
-
Step 3: Open menu "My Task" to execute task "Enter Data" of "TeamA"
-
Step 4: Login into User Portal with user "jane"
-
Step 5: Execute task "Verify Data" of "TeamB" to end the process.
