BPMN Training Part 10: Send Task, Receive Task

Chapter Overview

In this training chapter you get familiar with the BPMN send task and receive task.

A send task and receive task are also be used for inter process communication (see Chapter 9: Collaboration, Message Event, Message Flow), where they provide the identical functionality like a message send and message receive event.

In addition both tasks may have a task marker configuration to specify a loop type (see Configuration - BPMN Task Marker). Furthermore a send task provides the possibility to send an e-mail.

Usage comparison of a send/receive tasks and a message send/receive event

  • Use a message send/recieve event, if you want to use an inter process communication, only.
  • Use a send/receive task in case of a loop type (e.g. multi instance parallel or multi instance sequential) is required
  • Use a send task in case you want to send an e-mail

Tutorial Model: Automation/Business Process/Tutorial/BPM/SendReceiveTask/UserRegistration

Process Explanation:

  • The process starts with a user task "Request Registration".
  • After the gateway "Is canceled?" the default flow "NO" triggers a send task "Start Moderation" which sends a "Start Moderation" message to the process "Registration Moderation"
  • Then the sequence flow triggers a receive task "Receive Notification"
  • The process is now in a wait state until a "Notify Registration" message is received from the process "Registration Moderation"
