BPMN Training Part 13: Event-based Gateway

Chapter Overview

In this training chapter you get familiar with the BPMN event-based gateway.

An event-based gateway is a special kind of exclusive gateway. Like for an exclusive gateway only one of the conditional flow is processed directly after the corresponding event was catched.

Tutorial Model: Automation/Business Process/Tutorial/BPM/EventBasedGateway/UserRegistration

Process Explanation:

  • The process starts with a user task "Request Registration".
  • After the gateway "Is canceled?" the default flow "NO" triggers a message intermediate throw event "Start Moderation" which sends a "Start Moderation" message to the process "Registration Moderation"
  • Then the sequence flow triggers the event-based gateway "Timeout or Registration?"
  • The process is now in a wait state at two events
  • The intermediate timer event, which is configured for a waiting intervall of "3 min"
  • The intermediate message catch event "Receive Notification", which is wating for a message from the process "Registration Moderation"
  • The first event that fires triggers the user task "View Registration Result"
  • The process will then be repeated, if the gateway "Has Retry?" is true, otherwise the process is completed.
